When the device is testing, it initially calculates your body water through a series of electric frequencies being sent through your body by the connection points on your hands and feet. This portion of the testing is completed when the device is at approximately 70% on the screen but varies by model as certain models use more frequencies to test than others.
At that time, the device then takes those calculations and applies it to an algorithm that takes into account all of the frequency measurements as well as your personal information (i.e. height and weight). This portion of the testing is where your personal test result is finalized.
What you are seeing when the values begin to fluctuate, or even go backwards, on the screen during testing, is your personal information being applied to the electric current values taken form the machine and then the algorithm being calculated.
Because the machine has already completed sending the frequencies of electric currents through your body at around the 70% completion stage, stepping off the device will no longer affect the results. However, If you were to step off too early (i.e. 0-50%), the machine will have an error appear on the screen, signifying the test was interrupted.
By stepping off beforehand, the chance to view the results on the screen after they are calculated is lost and you would then be required to enter the saved database option to access the previous test. By staying on the device to completion, it saves the tester from having to do an extra step.
